Most websites these days basically all have Tag pages, but very few people optimize them. In fact, tags are a very commonly used feature, and if used well they can deliver good SEO results. But many sites use tag pages inappropriately, and inappropriate use can have negative effects. So how should a site's tags be optimized? And what should the correct use of tags look like? These are two very good questions. Today the SEO Tutorial site will talk specifically about tag page optimization methods. 【website optimization】

I. What is a tag page?

A tag page, or tag archive page, is a way of categorizing how a website's content is organized. The site owner attaches a tag to each article based on its content (as in the image above); since the tag is based on the content, the tag is usually the keyword most relevant to that article. For example, this article discusses tag page optimization methods, so it can be tagged with "tag page," "optimization," and the like. If the article is about 996, it can be tagged "996"; if it's about "seo," tag it "seo."

The site then creates a tag page for each tag, listing all articles that carry that tag on the tag page. So a tag page can be understood as a content aggregation page categorized by keyword.

The most common tag pages appear on blogs. Blog CMSs such as WordPress display tag links in the sidebar as a tag cloud, and the size of each tag represents how much content is in that tag:

II. The difference between Tag pages and category pages

A category page, which can also be called a section page, product listing page, and so on — in short, those pages in a site's main navigation. Tag pages and category pages are both ways of organizing content by category, each with its own characteristics and uses. Category pages generally have hierarchical relationships — for example, this post sits under the SEO techniques category. On larger sites the hierarchy is even more obvious, and the categories themselves are nested; for example, a pair of men's walking shoes might sit under this category structure: Shoes & Hats – Shoes – Men's Shoes – Casual Men's Shoes – Men's Walking Shoes. Each of the categories above also has its own hierarchy relative to the others, which is reflected in the URL directory structure. These hierarchical relationships are logical, and with the help of the directory structure, breadcrumb navigation, and so on, users can clearly tell where the current page sits within the site. Tag pages have no such hierarchy — the various tag pages are parallel to one another, their URLs have no tiered directories, and usually all tag page URLs are simply /tag/tag-name/.

Category pages are generally fixed — they don't increase or decrease unless the site is redesigned. Tag pages can be added at any time, especially when there's a breaking event or hot topic. Having "programmer" or "internet" or even "Jack Ma" in the category system is possible, but a "996" category is unlikely. A tag, however, can be "996." SEO characteristics of Tag pages

Because a Tag page is a content aggregation page built around a keyword, the relevance between tag pages and keywords is usually very high, and that's why tag pages often rank well. What's more, using tags is more flexible. As mentioned earlier, when there's a hot topic the keyword is often newly coined, and if there are multiple follow-up articles, aggregating them with a tag is the most appropriate approach.

Generally speaking, tags should be applied manually by editors. Some sites also automatically extract keywords from articles, or use a thesaurus, to generate tag pages, so tag pages are also frequently used to automatically generate large numbers of pages in an attempt to cover more keywords. This method should be used with great caution.
